4 Wet Things in the Evening Routine, and Why None of Them Is the Active Ingredient
A bowl. A soaked bandage. A flannel wrung over a sink. Damp pyjamas. Four wet objects, and not one of them is doing the job you think.
Everything in this routine has to be wet. And cold, and wrung out, and done again tomorrow.
Look at what it is actually made of.
1. A bowl

Filled from the kettle and the hot tap, carried from the kitchen or balanced on the side of the bath.
It holds water at the right temperature for about as long as it takes to get everything else ready. By the time the bandage is on, it is lukewarm.
2. A bandage that has to be soaked

The inner layer goes in the water, then gets wrung until it is damp rather than dripping. Get it wrong one way and the bed is wet. Get it wrong the other and it dries too fast.
3. A flannel wrung out over a sink

For the bits the bandage does not reach, and for rewetting at two in the morning if the wrap has dried out.
4. Pyjamas that go on damp

Because everything underneath is, and something has to go over the top.
And then in the morning they go in the wash with the sheets.

What they are for

They exist to make the emollient stay on the skin for a couple of hours instead of rubbing off in the first ten minutes, and to cool the skin as the damp layer dries.
Water on its own is not an active ingredient. Skin loses water through the night, and the wrap slows that loss while the damp layer cools. The holding, keeping the emollient against the skin, is a physical job. It does not need a recipe. It needs a layer that does not absorb.
The one that does not have to be wet

The Solen Base Night Sleeve. One dry garment with a continuous bonded inner face, over the emollient you already use. Open at the toes, because that is where the heat goes and those spaces stay dry.
It does not cool, and it is not a replacement for a wet wrap advised for a flare. It is the dry option for the nights in between.
- No bowl, no cold
- On in seconds
- Apparel, not a treatment

Before you buy
- Not over a prescription steroid unless your doctor has said so. Occlusion increases how much is absorbed.
- Not on broken, weeping or infected skin.
- Not between the toes. Those spaces stay dry.
