Every Heel Fix I Have Tried, Ranked From F to S

Cotton socks over cream in F is going to upset people. Here is why it is there, and what fills the empty S tier.

Argue with the rankings if you like. Cotton socks in F is going to upset people, because it is the thing every thread tells you to do.

F. Cotton socks over cream

A pale cotton sock with a dark greasy heel lying on a bottom shelf beside a plain white tube, photographed straight on against a warm white wall, a small…

Drinks the lot. Cotton pulls moisture off skin, so by the time you are asleep the sock has most of it.

It is the advice every forum gives: cream and cotton socks. But cotton is built to wick. Over a heel full of cream it is not a cover, it is a sponge, and it is the reason so many creams got written off as useless.

D. The grater

A stainless steel foot rasp on a narrow wall shelf, photographed straight on against a warm white wall, a blank card on the shelf lip

Grows it back thicker.

Hard skin forms because of friction. Filing it hard is more friction, so the skin rebuilds faster and tougher. Satisfying for a day, worse by the fortnight.

C. Pumice

Back by Thursday.

Gentler than the grater, so less rebound. But it still only removes, and nothing about the removal keeps the heel from drying out again.

B. 40% urea on its own

A plain white squeeze tube with no readable text standing alone on a narrow wall shelf against a warm white wall, a blank card on the shelf lip

Great for a week. Right chemistry, wrong duration.

Urea genuinely softens hard skin. It just needs hours on the skin, and on its own it gets rubbed off by the sheet, the slipper and whatever sock goes over it.

A. Cling film

A roll of cling film with a torn sheet draped over the shelf edge, on a narrow wall shelf against a warm white wall, a blank card on the shelf lip

Works, because it seals. Cannot leave the house.

It is the right idea, occlusion, which keeps the cream on and the skin damp. It is just the wrong material to live in: hot, noisy, slippy and only ever used on the organised nights.

S. The one that does the cling film's job under your shoes

The Day Sock folded alone on the top shelf of a narrow wall shelving unit, lit a little brighter than the empty shelves below it, a blank card on the shelf lip

A sock with a bonded inner face that does not soak anything up. Closed toe, thin enough for work shoes, with the cream you already own.

It takes the one thing that worked, the seal, and puts it into something you would wear anyway, for the longest stretch of the day.
