5 Reasons the Cling Film Trick Works (And the One Reason You Cannot Wear It to Work)
Cream, cling film, socks over the cling film. The mad part is that it works. There is a normal version of it.
Cream. Cling film. Socks over the cling film. Into bed and try not to think about being a grown woman in plastic wrap.
The mad part is that it works. You were right. Here is why, and the one flaw.

1. The cling film is not a treatment

It is a seal.
There is nothing in cling film that does anything to skin. What it does is cover it. Dermatologists have a word for this, occlusion, and they use it on purpose: covering skin slows down the water that normally evaporates from it all day, and holds whatever is on it in place. Your skin stays wetter, for longer, under the cream.
2. It stops the sock drinking the cream

Plastic cannot absorb, so the cream stays on the heel.
Without the film, the cotton sock over the top would have pulled most of it into the knit. With the film between them, the sock never touches the cream. That one layer is the whole difference, and it is why the trick keeps getting passed around.
3. That is why so many people quietly do it

“Aquaphor, plastic wrap, then socks over the plastic wrap.”
Beauty forum · not our customer
Three separate groups of people with nothing in common, women with dry heels, parents of children with sensitive skin and long distance runners, have each worked out the same trick on their own, with cling film, freezer bags and even supermarket produce bags. When that many people improvise the same fix, the fix is right. The execution is the problem.

4. It only works on the nights you can be bothered

It slides, it tears, and it is a faff at eleven at night.
Plastic does not breathe, so feet get hot and clammy and you wake up having kicked it off. It rustles every time you turn over. And on a Wednesday when you are tired, it simply does not happen. A routine that only works on the organised nights is a routine that stalls.
5. It cannot come to work with you

The Day Sock is that seal built into a sock. Bonded inner face, closed toe, thin enough to go under your work shoes. Cream on at seven, out the door.
The silicone does what the film did, holding the cream against the skin, but it is part of the fabric, so it does not slide, tear or rustle. And it goes to work with you, which means the seal happens every day instead of on the good nights.
