4 Steps in the Bedtime Heel Routine, and Why Three of Them Only Protect the House

4 Steps in the Bedtime Heel Routine, and Why Three of Them Only Protect the House

Cream on, hands washed, tiptoe across the landing, cotton sock as a shield for the duvet. Four steps, and only the first was ever about your skin.

The routine has four steps, and three of them exist to protect the house.

Count them.

1. Cream on

The edge of a white bath at night, a plain white squeeze tube with its cap off resting on the rim beside a folded towel

The only step that was ever about your heels.

Two minutes, sitting on the edge of the bath at the end of a long day. It is also the only step that actually does anything, and everything after it is about stopping it going anywhere.

2. Hands washed

A bathroom basin at night with the tap running over a bar of soap, a hand towel hanging beside it, a plain white tube on the basin edge

So the cream does not end up on the door handles.

Heel cream is made to be thick and to stay put on skin, which also means it stays put on everything else. A light switch, a banister, the edge of the duvet cover.

3. The careful route across the landing

A carpeted landing at night shot at ankle height, the strip of warm light from an open bedroom door making a path along the cream carpet

Tiptoeing so none of it reaches the carpet.

Heels up, weight on the balls of the feet, across the landing like you are sneaking in after a night out. Everyone who has done this knows exactly how silly it feels.

4. Cotton socks on, as a shield for the duvet

A pair of pale cotton bed socks lying on a duvet at night beside a pillow, one of them showing a darker greasy patch at the heel

Which is also the thing that takes the cream off.

This is the step that undoes step one. The sock is there to protect the bedding, and it does, by absorbing the cream into itself. By the time you are asleep most of what you put on is in the knit, and what is left gets rubbed onto the sheet anyway.

The replacement has one step

A bright bedroom in the morning: a woman's work outfit laid out on the bed, a blouse and trousers, and on top of them a Solen Base Day Sock folded neatly…

Cream on, Day Sock on, get dressed, go to work.

Cotton and cream One Day Sock
Four steps One step
Grease on the duvet Nothing on the duvet
Tiptoeing, cling film, freezer bags No second step at all
A separate pair kept for bed Machine washable at 40 with everything else

The duvet is not involved. The carpet is not involved. The sock does not absorb anything, because the inside is bonded silicone, so the cream stays on the heel for the working day instead of in the knit.
